    Are you healthy or just not sick?

    A sedentary lifestyle combined with poor food choices has increased the rate of obesity as well as diabetes to epidemic numbers. The NCHS reports that in 2005-2006, more than 72 million Americans were classified as obese. To classify as obese, a Body Mass Index or BMI of 30 is reached. Calculating your BMI is easy with this simple formula: weight in pounds x 703/height in inches2.

    Here is an example of a male:

    190lbsx703= 133,570
    71 inchesx71 inches= 5,041
    133,570/5,041= 26.5 BMI

    In the following example, this male is considered overweight. To reach a healthy weight he would have to lose 15 pounds to get below a BMI of 25.

    There are other factors besides BMI that determine whether an individual is healthy such as fat to muscle ratio. The BMI formula is a good screen as to where an individual is in regards to there weight and risk for disease.
